7 Home Remedies to Unclog Bathroom Sink

1. Hot Water

The most common and the simplest way of dealing with a clogged bathroom sink is hot - almost fermented - water.

First, you need to prepare and get a simple pot where you will boil some water. Once that is done, wait a couple of minutes and then head to your bathroom.

Now, what you should do is pour some of the hot water into your bathroom sink, because heat is often a good way to remove most of the materials which caused the clogging.

It is really important not to pour the entire pot at once though because very hot water could cause damage to the pipes if poured in large amounts. This is true especially for pipes made of heat and acid sensitive materials, like PVC pipes.

So, instead of pouring the entire pot into the sink at once, what you need to do is do it several times, with some reasonable rest interval in between.

Once you have done this a couple of times, you could try to run the water again and see if the sink is still clogged. With smaller and not too serious clogging, this method tends to work very well, but it also depends on the material that caused the problem. If it is a bit harder, then water itself might not be enough to penetrate through.

If the problem still persists after you have done this method several times, then you might want to try something else.

2. Baking Soda + Vinegar/Salt

The stories about baking soda doing wonders with clogged pipes are very true. Of course, in combination with some other elements, like vinegar and salt, it can be even more effective.

Vinegar

Let us examine the vinegar mixture first. What you want to do here is pour a bit of baking soda and vinegar into the clogged sink. Usually, 1 cup of both baking soda and vinegar would do the trick. When you pour both of it, you should wait for some time, 30 minutes to one hour should do the trick.

After waiting game ends, you should try running some water and check if the sink is still clogged. If it is, then you might want to try pouring hot water again, since it might do the trick, now that vinegar and soda did part of their job.

Salt

Another element that goes well with baking soda is salt. The idea here is the same as with vinegar. Take 1 cup of both salt and baking soda and pour it down the bathroom sink.

Leave it be for around 30-45 minutes, then try to run water again in order to check if the sink is still clogged.

If it is still clogged, then, again, you might want to try with the hot water method. If the material that caused clogging got weakened enough by salt and baking soda, then hot water should do the trick.

3. Caustic Soda

Before you start using caustic soda, or how it is differently called, sodium hydroxide, you need to prepare yourself and protect your hands and eyes, because the component is known to be harmful to human skin.

So, in order to be safe, you should get some gloves and adequate eye protection before you start using this method.

Now, like in all other methods, caustic soda requires some water to be mixed with. But, here you don’t want to use hot water, but cold instead. What you should do is mix caustic soda with water with a wooden spoon or whatever you are using for mixing, it is just preferred to be made of wood.

Once you pour it down your bathroom sink, leave it there for around half an hour.

The mixture will make sparkles and fizz, which should pierce the material which caused the clogging because, during this process, it generates some amount of heat, which is effective against blockades in the pipes.

After that is done, run some hot water to flush you should and in case that the problems still exist and the water is not running smoothly, you should repeat the entire process one more time.

4. Wired Hanger

If you find that none of the previous methods actually did the job, then you might need to get your hands a bit dirty and clean up the sink with some tools.

The simplest tool of those could be made at home, by using a hanger made of wire. You could use it to make a simple hook that would allow you to get the material that is blocking the sink and pull it up.

Of course, sometimes it just cannot be done this way, with this tool, but it is often very useful and there is no harm in trying out this method.

5. Plunger

One of the best and the easiest tools to use if of course, good, old plunger. If you don’t know what plunger is, then you probably lived in another universe or you have never watched cartoons. Yes, that moment when Tom tried to plunge out Jerry from its hole is hilarious.

There are different versions of plungers, but since here we are talking about the bathroom sink, you might want to get a smaller one.

It is very simple to use, just put the plunging area on the drain and try to suck out the clogged material. You can use hot water first, to try to soften it up a bit. So, pour some hot water down the sink and then use the plunger.

It is a very effective tool as well, which is why it is one of the most common tools in almost every household.

If plunger and water don’t give needed results themselves, you could try using baking soda methods as well. The plunger usually works very well together with most of these methods I have mentioned here, so don’t hesitate to use it.

6. Drain Auger

For the more serious clogging issues, these previous methods might not do the trick and solve the problem. If that happens, you need to bring the heavy artillery onto the battlefield.

When it comes to that, the best option is to use drain auger or drain snake, how it is called differently. It is very simple, and yet very effective tool for dealing with clogged pipes drains and sinks.

There are several versions of this tool, from usual manual augers to the more advanced electric ones, which are used for more serious clogging issues that require the wire to go deeper and pierce stronger.

But for our needs here, I think the usual manual auger will do the trick just fine.

The way you should use it is put the snake into the bathroom sink and don’t stop until it reaches the blockade. Once it is there, you can use manual handle which would rotate the simple drill that is used to pierce the material which caused the clogging.

Once the drill is through, all the material should attach to the snake’s cable and you should be able to pull it back out of the pipe. This process is usually done several times, so you wouldn’t miss any material which was left behind.

When you finish the process, you can use hot water to flush through the pipe and clean it completely. After that, try to run the water and see if it runs smoothly.

Usually, this method works very well, so you shouldn’t have any problems with it.

7. Soda

Now, as a bonus method, I want to add something which may sound and look weird, and that something is the use of soda as a mean to unclog your bathroom sink.

Sometimes, using Coca-Cola or Pepsi can do the trick and unclog the pipe. Yes, it does sound weird but it could work. The way you do it just pours some of it down the sink and wait a bit. Then try running the water to see if it is still clogged.

Try a couple of times and it might work. You could also combine it with the hot water method, so after you are done with the soda, try pouring some hot water and the clogging might easily be defeated.

Here are more cleaning uses of Coca Cola.
