It takes 24 hours for a new well to run clear. However, it might take a bit longer, 1 to 2 days in case you need some sort of filtration or water treating system going even after your water runs clearer, or after 24 hours.

Why Is My Well Water So Dirty?

There could be several reasons why your water is so dirty. Below are probable possibilities;

Damaged Pipes in your water system

Your well water will be dirty if you have broken pipes in your water system. This is because the broken pipes will allow soil and debris to infiltrate your faucets. As a result, the water turns brownish, tastes bad, and leaves it with an odor.

Presence of Organic Matter

If your well water leaves an appearance of black or yellow stains on clothing, toilets, and sinks or has a musty, earthy smell then organic matter or decaying vegetation. They indicate the presence of other harmful bacteria that also causes a color change in water.

So, an immediate remedy to this situation is to incorporate better filtration and chlorination procedures.

Mineral Deposits

Sometimes the well system may accumulate excessive amounts of mineral deposits which can break down in well pipes, leaving behind sediment, grit, and grime in the well water. This could occur due to a lack of regular water well maintenance, cleaning, and testing.

You might want to combat the chance of this dirt entering your home by installing a water filter and cleaning it regularly.

High Iron and Manganese Levels in your water

The presence of iron and manganese in your well water is one of the common causes of dirt in well water. These elements often result from corrosion of water pipes, iron, or steel well casing, leaving behind red stains in toilets, sinks, and washing machines.

Your Water Level is Getting Low

Dirty well water can also be an indication that your water level is getting low and the water has started to interact with the dirt or any other material that settles at the bottom.

While there is no problem when the water level is high, there is a problem when the what level begins to go low. This is because the pump will start to pick up materials from the bottom causing the water to turn brown.

Accumulation of Silt

The presence of silt can turn your well water brown. Often, silt or sediments enter the well water through the pump. for instance, if the well materials get damaged, dissolved solids from rainwater may easily find their way through the pump and into your well.

Poor Well Installation

An improper installation such as a well lined with poorly sealed stone, brick, tile, or casing can allow sediment to seep into your water supply. Also, if your well is built in an area prone to flood, it can be susceptible to contamination.

How Long Does It Take for a New Well to Run Clear?

It takes an average of 24 hours for a new well to run clear. But sometimes this duration can go for more than a day, 1 to 2 days or more in case you need some sort of filtration or water testing and treating system going.

Water testing is often important especially after the well has been installed. However, the water is not usually safe for human consumption. You must test the well water for possible contaminants such as fertilizer, septic leakage, nitrite, and iron bacteria to ensure it is safe and clean. This may take longer than a day, 1 to 3 days.

Besides the water testing, a new well may undergo purification, something that may affect the period of water to clear. In fact, it is important for water purification to take place especially in parts of the countries where the soil is rich in iron.

This is because iron soil might cause different types of problems including foul-smelling water and water that stains clothes among others.

Additionally, it might take more than 24 hours if the water is still dirty after the stipulated period of running water.

How Can I Make My Well Water Clear?

There are a number of ways you can make your well water clear. Some of the common ways include sanitization, making a DIYer design, chlorination, or filtration among other ways.

Sanitization

This is an easy process that will only require your effort in a day to provide clean, safe drinking water for the users.

Here is how to sanitize your well water;

Step 1: Run the Well Water Until it is Clear

First, you need to run the well water until it looks clearer. To do this, connect the garden hose to any outdoor faucet then turn the water on. After the well water has run and you are sure that it is looking clear, shut off the outdoor faucet.

Step 2: Pour bleach into the well

Take any of your household bleach, and pour a gallon of it down the well casing. Normally, most well casings have a small breather hole or removable top that will allow you to pour the bleach into the well. But if the breather hole is too small, use a funnel to fill with the bleach. Make sure you don’t spill the bleach.

Step 3: Run Water to the Casing

Take the garden hose and place it inside the well casing then open the outdoor spigot. With the garden hose still attached, run the water until you detect a strong bleach odor then shut off the spigot.

Step 4: Run Cold Water at Home

Open the faucets in your home one at a time then run cold water until you detect the bleach smell from each of them. Once you are sure the smell is incoming from all the faucets, shut off the faucets then leave the heavy bleach water sitting in the plumbing pipes for five to 24 hours. Though you can choose to leave it for more than a day.

Step 5: Flush the water

Remove the garden hose from the well casing then open the spigot valve and allow the bleach water to flush from the water system. Deal with the heavy bleach smell by running the hose water until it diminishes then shut off the spigot.

Afterward, open the household faucets and run cold water, allowing it to flush the indoor plumbing pipes until the bleach smell has diminished.

Replace broken pipes

Broken pipes may infiltrate components into your well, making them change color. Therefore, if you want to make brown-colored water clear, it might require you to replace broken or damaged pipes.

Reversed Osmosis

If you want to completely remove organic materials from the dirty water, you might want to install a reverse osmosis system before your water heater. This will provide your household with clean and clear water. You can also install it at your kitchen sink to give you access to clean water from your cold water tap.

Filtration

Finally, you can use a sediment filter as a primary filter to clear your well water from dirty or discolored water with a sediment problem. A sediment filter is usually built with pores of 1 to 5 microns in size, which are designed to remove dissolved solids such as dirt, sand, dust, and rust.
